The name Cacouna, a small village located on the banks of the St. Lawrence The name of this small village located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River comes from the word Kakoua-Nak, which means “the place where the porcupine lives”. The city owes its name to an Amerindian tribe, the Porcupines, who once lived in the region. This village was first inhabited by Acadians after they were deported, and then by tourists who spent their summer in the area. Cacouna is home to Canada's smallest Amerindian reservation: 0.5 acres! This reservation is also the administrative centre of the Malecite nation.
The church of the village is classified historical monument because of its beautiful indoor decoration and its imposing outdoor architecture. Nowadays, you can still admire the sumptuous manors that rich bourgeois families built here. The varied architecture of the village gives it an eclectic look, yet full of charm. Climb up to the summit of the observation tower from where you will have a breathtaking panoramic view on the St. Lawrence River and its islands.
