The Rivière-du-Loup area is the economic hub of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region as well as its educative centre. The history of this area started in the 17th century, during the epoch of fur trade and fur traders. The city of Rivière-du-Loup then became one of the most important trading posts of the region. The vast forests surrounding Rivière-du-Loup were perfect for hunting, and drew many fur traders.
Later on, the fertile territory was divided into large seigniories, which allowed the development of agriculture. The built heritage that can be admired in this area is very imposing and includes, in addition to many ancestral houses, large hotels and beautiful churches. The peace surrounding this area always surprises visitors like at the Société Duvetnor.
The numerous parks, for their part, invite visitors to relax. You can also try the peaceful access to the St. Lawrence River and to Île Verte, in the middle of the River. Enjoy the fresh air of the island to do some bird watching, go biking, hiking, whale watching or ice fishing in winter. The parc des Chutes de Rivière-du-Loup and the Site ornithologique du marais de Gros-Cacouna invite you to fully enjoy nature. The sea baths in Cacouna will be enough for a complete relaxation, while the museums and the interpretation centres will tell you about the history of the area.
