Kamouraska

In Kamouraska, you can go to the municipal quay and leave for a zodiac excursion or go observe sea mammals, birds, scenery of the St. Lawrence River and the islands of Kamouraska. Then stop at the Centre d’interprétation de l’anguille de Kamouraska, whose owner has been fishing eels for over 35 years. She will teach you all there is to know about that traditional job and will make you taste smoked eel canapés. The Ancient Palais de justice de Kamouraska is also worth a look. Inside this historic building, you will find an art and history centre and an exhibition presenting ancient maps and land registries about the occupation of the seigniory lands and Kamouraska islands. On the same avenue, the general store is a replica of what was the general store at the time. Inside, the counters are full of country products.

A little bit farther on avenue Morel, the Musée de Kamouraska invites you to visit its permanent exhibition that relates the lifestyle of the ancestors and renowned people who have been shaping the cultural identity of the Kamouraska region for over 325 years. Finally, on road 132, you need to stop at the Berceau de Kamouraska, which is a patrimonial site and the first civil and religious centre in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. A chapel is now located where once stood the two first churches of the cemetery where some 1,300 pioneers were buried. If you want to relax a bit, stop at the La Grande Voile health centre, which offers rooms for rent, packages and a restaurant. You could even take body care lessons if you wish! But above all, don’t miss the Painting Symposium that takes place in the village each year and during which 75 artists come to show their works and paint in front of the visitors.
